Compared with the previous year, in 2010 the volume of book publishing in Ukraine, by copies and titles, declined by 30 percent, First Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine Anatoly Murakhovskyi said Thursday.

"Among the problems of publishing industry, unfortunately, there is a certain failure in publishing, reading, a lack of managerial staff," he said in a conversation with an UKRINFORM reporter during Thursday's opening of Children's Charity Book Fair in the capital city.

According to Murakhovskyi, on the one hand, not enough literature that would satisfy readers' demand is published, on the other there is a decrease in the demand for book among readers. "Currently there is a need for people to return to book reading. And, of course, it is necessary to properly form the basis of public policy in this area, to develop a state program and promote the Ukrainian book," he said.

Speaking of protectionist policies on book publishing, Murakhovskyi noted: the State Committee did its best for the Parliament to prolong by 5 years benefits at all stages of the book production. "In these five years, to a large extent, we should make a revolution in publishing: that is to form publishing industry which, the same as in developed countries, would bring profit to the state budget and will be a serious investment in the development of the society," he said.
